VISIT WOODCHUCK LODGE

EVENTS

Woodchuck Lodge hosts various talks, walks, and activities, most notably through our “Wild Saturdays” program. More information can be found on our Events Page.

The Lodge itself is open for tours during our “Wild Saturdays” and other events. However, many of the more delicate Burroughs' artifacts are in storage during our restoration of the site.

Nature Trails

The nature trails surrounding the Lodge are open daily, from dawn to dusk, year-round. The trails lead through fields and woods, and are lined with bird houses and benches - making them the perfect places to take in nature just as John Burroughs himself once did.

Down the road from Woodchuck Lodge is Boyhood Rock & John Burroughs’ grave, part of New York States’ “John Burroughs Memorial State Historic Site.”

Trout Lily Trail + Summer House Spur

“Trout-Lily Trail” is a short .09 mile loop through the woods directly behind Woodchuck Lodge. It connects to “Summerhouse Spur” (.05 miles) which ends at an actual “Summerhouse” style structure that has a small lending library attached.

Poet’s Path

The .24 mile loop, “Poet’s Path”, winds around the nearest meadow to the Lodge. The area is dotted with apple trees planted by John Burroughs himself. The southern portion of the trail curves around a small pond and birdhouses sit on the northwestern edge of the trail.

Centennial Trail + Short Meadow Loop

“Centennial Trail” is the longest trail, making a .55 mile loop around the large meadow at the southern end of the Lodge property. “Short Meadow Loop” (.30 miles) cuts across the center of the meadow, connecting to the long east and west edges of “Centennial Trail”.

Boyhood Rock & Grave Site

Down the road from Woodchuck Lodge is “John Burroughs Memorial State Historic Site” a New York State managed Park, that includes the iconic “Boyhood Rock” and John Burroughs gravesite. A .08 mile trail leads from the entrance of the park to the memorial area. More info can be found on NY’s State Park page.
